Pop culture, to me, is more than just entertainment. It’s something that shapes how we think and connect with others. In Alexander O. Philippe’s TED Talk, he explains that movies, music, and TV shows influence our lives in big ways, even when we don’t notice. I agree with him because I’ve seen how certain songs or shows can change people’s moods, opinions, or even inspire them to do something different. Pop culture gives us something to talk about and bond over, and it often brings people together. I think Philippe is right that pop culture has power, not just in what we watch or listen to, but in how it affects the way we see the world.
Philippe talks about how culture connects people, but Phil Miller looks at it in another way. He says that traditional pop culture is kind of dying because people don’t all share the same interests anymore. Now everyone watches or listens to what they like online on TikTok, YouTube, or streaming apps so culture is split into a lot of small groups instead of one big one. I agree with him because I see it every day. Everyone I know has different favorite shows, songs, and influencers. I think this change makes sense because people want to follow what they actually enjoy, not just what’s popular. For businesses, though, that means it’s harder to reach everyone at once. Companies now have to market to smaller groups that like certain things instead of trying to please everybody.
When I think about both Philippe and Miller, I feel like they’re both right in their own ways. Pop culture still matters like Philippe says, but it’s also changed a lot like Miller points out. I think that’s a good thing because people have more choice now, but it also means it’s harder to have that one big moment where everyone is watching or talking about the same thing. For me, pop culture is something that connects us even if it’s in smaller ways. It still shapes what we care about and what we talk about. Whether it’s through movies, music, or social media, pop culture keeps evolving but its influence never really goes away.
